Voice & Memory

Talk it through — and pick up where you left off

PsychPal lets you reflect by text or voice, and can remember context from earlier sessions so you don't have to start over every time.

How text and voice reflection work

You can type your thoughts or speak them aloud — whichever feels more natural in the moment. PsychPal's AI companion reads or listens, then responds with reflective questions and observations.

Voice input is transcribed using OpenAI Whisper. The recording itself is discarded immediately after transcription — only the text is kept. This means your voice is never stored or replayed.

What "memory" means in PsychPal

Memory in PsychPal means the app can carry context from one conversation to the next. If you mentioned a recurring stressor last week, PsychPal can reference it this week without you re-explaining the background.

This is not perfect recall and it is not a clinical record. It is a practical tool to help your reflections feel continuous rather than fragmented.

What PsychPal remembers and what you control

  • Conversation history is stored in an encrypted database in Canada (Montreal, ca-central-1).
  • You can delete individual conversations or your full account at any time from within the app.
  • PsychPal never uses the contents of your conversations for advertising.
  • Conversation data is retained for seven years after account closure to meet Canadian healthcare records norms, then permanently deleted.
  • You can request a copy of your data or ask for earlier deletion by contacting [email protected].

Privacy and voice data

Voice transcription is handled by OpenAI Whisper. Your audio is sent to OpenAI's servers for transcription, then discarded. OpenAI processes data under a Data Processing Agreement that prohibits using your content to train general AI models.

Primary records are stored in Canada. Some processing occurs outside Canada through named service providers. Full details are in the Privacy Policy.

When people use voice and memory

A late-night thought

It's 11 p.m. and you're replaying a conversation from earlier. You open PsychPal and speak your thoughts aloud rather than type. The AI responds when you're ready.

A recurring work stressor

You've mentioned a difficult dynamic with a colleague across several sessions. PsychPal can reference that context so you can go deeper rather than starting over.

Preparing for a therapy appointment

Before your Thursday session, you speak through what's been on your mind this week. The transcript becomes a set of notes you can bring to your therapist.

Limits of memory

Memory in PsychPal is a practical continuity tool — it is not a clinical record, a diagnosis, or a substitute for professional judgment. PsychPal does not assess your condition, track symptoms medically, or provide therapy.

If you need urgent help or may be in immediate danger, call emergency services or contact 988 in Canada or the United States.

Frequently asked questions

Can I speak instead of typing?

Yes. PsychPal supports voice input. You speak, the app transcribes your words, and the AI responds. Voice recordings are transcribed and then discarded — only the text transcript is retained.

Does PsychPal remember earlier conversations?

PsychPal can retain context from previous sessions so you can continue a reflection without re-explaining your situation. You control what is saved and can delete it at any time from within the app.

Can I delete saved conversations or my account?

Yes. You can delete individual conversations or your entire account and all associated data from within the app. Account data is retained for seven years after closure to meet Canadian healthcare records norms, after which it is permanently deleted. See the Privacy Policy for full details.

Are voice recordings retained?

No. Voice recordings are transcribed using OpenAI Whisper and then discarded. Only the text transcript is stored.

Is PsychPal listening when the app is closed?

No. PsychPal only processes audio when you actively use the voice feature within the app. It does not run in the background or access your microphone when the app is closed.
